2014 in review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2014 annual report for this blog.

Here's an excerpt:

A San Francisco cable car holds 60 people. This blog was viewed about 3,200 times in 2014. If it were a cable car, it would take about 53 trips to carry that many people.

I don’t know whether I’m more excited to learn that 53 cable cars full of people visited The Sailor’s Woman in 2014 (from 57 countries!) or that WordPress has a team of monkeys hard at work compiling these stats. (Is the SPCA monitoring the situation?)

Heartfelt thanks to everyone who’s caught a ride The Sailor’s Woman cable car and best wishes for a wonderful 2015.

How to Destroy Your Blog in One Easy Step

Oh dear!

I’ve screwed up, big time.

I was uploading a new photo to my WordPress media library. The process was much slower than usual.

I noticed I had used over 30% of my available storage space. Could this be the reason it had slowed down?

Suddenly I had an idea! Things would obviously speed up if I cleared out the library, creating a virtual storage vacuum that would suck up new pictures like a Chihuahua with a breakfast sausage.

Don’t ask me why, but it made sense at the time.

I deleted hundreds of photos from my WordPress media library. I felt pretty damn good about this virtual de-cluttering, especially since I didn’t do it randomly. I deliberately deleted images I’d already used in my blog. After all, I don’t re-use photos, so why keep these ones around clogging up my library and using my finite amount storage space?

Hours after permanently deleting all these images, I visited The Sailor’s Woman.

Did you know that when photos are deleted from the WordPress media library they’re also deleted from the blog posts on which they appeared?

Neither did I.

The Sailor’s Woman has 172 posts. 148 of them, many gallery posts with multiple photos, have been wrecked.

Sobbing silently on the keyboard doesn’t seem to help.

One Lovely Blog Award

A Story A Day nominated me for the One Lovely Blog Award. (Thank you!)

As well as mentioning the blogger who nominated me, I get to list seven fascinating facts about myself. (I love talking about myself, so this should be fun!) and nominate five other blogs for the One Lovely Blog Award. I post a comment about the nomination on each of these blogs and, voila, the chain continues from there.

First, my seven fun facts:

1. Years ago, I won a Halloween story contest held by the local newspaper. Because I wrote the story in the first person, some of my friends assumed the protagonist (who may have been encountering ghosts or may have been slipping into insanity–it was all very creepy and mysterious) was actually me.
2. I don’t like bacon–can’t stand the smell, the texture, the taste and the mess it makes when you try to cook it.
3. People are shocked to learn I have a tattoo.
4. I once broke a bone in my foot when I slipped on the stairs.
5. The grossest thing I’ve ever heard was the sound of that bone snapping.
6. My first job ever was at a public library.
7. I’ve been told I get a little grumpy if I miss my morning cup of coffee, but I don’t believe this.

Here are the blogs I’m happy to nominate for the One Lovely Blog Award. I hope they’re as excited about this as I am!

1. British Blokes Cooking (britishblokescooking.wordpress.com)
2. Second to the Right (secondtotheright.com)
3. Charoltte Hoather (charlottehoatherblog.com)
4. Aweigh With Me (aweighwithme.com)
5. countingducks (countingducks.wordpress.com)
